Advice For New Dads

I am about to become a dad for the 6th time. This is the advice I needed when we had our first.

  1. Your number one priority is to support your wife.

  2. Being a father is never an obligation. It is a gift.

  3. Yes your life will change. Stop worrying about and lean into the miracle that is about to occur.

  4. Shouting is not going to help.

  5. Date nights must be put into the calendar.

  6. Read to your kids. Don’t just put them next to you watching TV.

  7. Become friends with Disney playlists.

  8. Your wife will always be more tired than you. So suck it up.

  9. Double down on your investment game.

  10. Make a list of the type of dad you would want to be remembered for. Review that daily.

  11. Don’t let your wife be the only one who gets up at night.

  12. You will have less time for all your usual hobbies. But your child will give you 100x more joy than any of those old activities combined.

  13. Your kids will imitate everything you do. Much earlier than you think possible.

  14. Delete "later" from your vocabulary. Your kids live in the now, so should you.

  15. Always think: what can I do to make my wife's life easier?

  16. Try and find activities you love that you can do with your kids. Those will be their fondest memories.

  17. When you are with your kids: no phone.

  18. Before you spoil your kids, spoil your wife.

  19. Work is vital. But don't think about work when your child is telling you a story. They can tell and it hurts them.

  20. Always tell them that you love them. All-day. Every day.

  21. It is not about you.

Being a father is the greatest gift. Honour it through unwavering love and support for your wife and children every day.

Be the Example.
